FAQs

What is Collagen?

Collagen is the long-chain of amino acids that builds our skin, connective tissue and bones but cannot be absorbed through our standard diet. It is made primarily of three amino acids: proline, hydroxyproline and glycine - which gives it unique functional properties different from all other proteins. This also makes it the most important structural protein in the body. Collagen is formed from three very long chains of over 1,000 amino acids twisting into a helix conformation. This tightly twisted helix gives collagen the strength to build our body but is difficult to break down during digestion and too large to cross the intestinal wall, so in its unhydrolyzed, full-length form, collagen is not an effective oral supplement.

What about hydrolyzed collagen versus collagen peptides?

It is important to understand that hydrolyzed collagen versus collagen peptides are two names for the same product. Full length collagen is broken down into collagen peptides through a process called hydrolysis, so collagen peptides are frequently also referred to as hydrolyzed peptides.

What is the difference between Marine Collagen and Bovine Collagen?

The main difference of the two is clearly, Marine collagen is made from fish skin (a by-product of the seafood industry to prevent overfishing our oceans) and Bovine collagen is made from cow hides or bones.  GLOW by VITALITY’s Marine collagen is a very clean source of collagen because we source from wild caught fish and third-party test to ensure there are no contaminants or heavy metals.  Bovine sources may be fed hormones or genetical modified feed.  Marine Collagen is made mostly of type 1 collagen, and is very easily absorbed, allowing us to take less to get the same benefit of a larger dose of other sources of collagen.

What does marine collagen do for our skin?

Collagen in our skin begins to break down at the rather young age of 21. As we get older, we continue to lose more and more of our own collagen, and considering Type I collagen makes up 70% of our skin, replenishing it is important for maintaining healthy, happy, youthful skin. Marine collagen may decrease the amount of wrinkles and appearance of cellulite in our skin. In addition, supplementing with fish collagen may help improve skin hydration, firmness, smoothness, elasticity, and suppleness!

I have fine lines and wrinkles, is it too late to take collagen?

No, it is never too late to start supplementing collagen!  Collagen will continue to deplete from our skin, muscles, bones, teeth and GI tract about 1% a year. By supplementing collagen now, you can protect the collagen you do have, plus begin to regenerate collagen cells.  Not only for outer health but for the main structural components of our body long term.

What are the benefits of Vitamin C with Collagen?

Vitamin C plays a critical role in collagen synthesis. When taken orally, it activates the body's own mechanisms for producing collagen.

What are the benefits of Cranberry?

Cranberries are considered a superfood and are packed with important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (plant compounds that benefit your health).

Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

Proanthocyanidin is a phytonutrient that has been found to help prevent E. coli bacteria from attaching to the lining of your urinary tract. If bacteria can’t stick to the tissues, they are unable to multiply and cause an infection. This is why cranberries are commonly used to help prevent against frequent urinary tract infections.

Packed with Antioxidants

Antioxidants are phytonutrients that fight “Free Radicals” in your body. Free radicals are compounds that cause harm to your cells and contribute to chronic disease and signs of aging.

What are the benefits of Biotin?

In GLOW’s formulation of Collagen + Cranberry, biotin increases the bioavailability of Collagen as well as provides its own host of benefits from the strengthening of hair and nails to promoting healthy skin.  This makes a great addition to this beauty formula!

With beets having a high sugar content is the product still considered sugar free?

Although beets are higher in natural sugars, VITALITY uses only a very small amount (<300mg/serving) of beet root powder as a natural food colourant. This means that an even smaller amount of natural sugar is contained in each serving. In fact, this amount is so small (<500mg) that the FDA considers our product “sugar-free”.
